Finasteride 1 mg Price in Europe: Cost, Access and Value in 2026

If you are experiencing hair loss and your doctor has discussed finasteride 1 mg, one of your first questions is likely the ongoing cost: how much will treatment cost per month and per year? Finasteride 1 mg is a prescription medicine for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss), a common form of hair loss involving genetic and hormonal factors. In several countries, including France and the United Kingdom, patients pay for the medication themselves, and retail prices vary with the country, the pharmacy and the brand.

This guide presents indicative price examples for 2026, explains why prices differ between brands, compares the original brand (Propecia) with generic equivalents and summarises the 2025 European safety review, together with the practical checks to make before obtaining treatment, including online.

What Is Finasteride 1 mg and Why Is It Prescribed?

Finasteride belongs to a class of medicines called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It inhibits the type II 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, which reduces (without fully suppressing) the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In genetically susceptible hair follicles, DHT contributes to progressive miniaturisation: hair growth cycles become shorter, and hairs become finer and less visible over time.

Finasteride 1 mg, taken once a day, is authorised in many European countries for the early stages of male androgenetic alopecia, generally in men aged 18 to 41 (the exact indication is set by each country's product information). Benefits usually take 3 to 6 months to become visible, and continued treatment is needed to maintain them: after stopping, they generally disappear within 9 to 12 months. The same active substance is used at a higher 5 mg dose to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.

Clinical efficacy: what does the money buy you?

A systematic review published in 2010 in Archives of Dermatology (now JAMA Dermatology) found that men taking oral finasteride were about 1.8 times more likely to report an improvement in their hair than men taking a placebo (an inactive tablet), based on short-term trials with moderate-quality evidence. A 2021 review reported an average increase in total hair count compared with placebo of 12.4 hairs/cm² at 24 weeks and 16.4 hairs/cm² at 48 weeks. These are average results, and individual responses vary.

Longer-term data come from Japanese observational studies. In a cohort of 3,177 men, of whom 2,561 were analysed for efficacy, 87.1% showed improvement on standardised photographs, including mild improvements. These studies were not randomised and mainly followed men who chose to continue treatment, which may overestimate the benefit. Overall, the main value of finasteride is to slow or stabilise hair loss over time. This matters when budgeting: it is a long-term treatment rather than a one-off cost.

Is Finasteride 1 mg Reimbursed in Europe?

In the countries we have checked, finasteride 1 mg prescribed for hair loss is not covered by public health insurance, so patients pay the full price of the medication:

• France: finasteride 1 mg for hair loss is not reimbursed by the national health insurance (Assurance Maladie).

• United Kingdom: finasteride for hair loss is not available on the NHS and must be obtained on a private prescription.

Coverage rules differ between countries and can change, so check with your national health insurer. Some private or supplementary insurance policies may cover part of the cost: check the terms of your own policy.

Finasteride 1 mg Prices in Europe: Indicative Examples by Country

In France, finasteride 1 mg is a non-reimbursed medicine whose retail price is freely set by each pharmacy, so prices vary from one pharmacy to another. Pricing and dispensing rules differ in other countries. The figures below are indicative examples for generic 28-tablet packs. The cost per 30 days and per year is calculated pro rata at one tablet a day (in practice, you buy whole packs) and excludes consultation, dispensing and delivery fees.

Country Price (28 tablets, generic) Cost per 30 days Cost per year
France (generics) ~14 € to 27 € ~15 € to 29 € ~180 € to 350 €
United Kingdom (private) £10 to £14 ~£11 to £15 ~£130 to £180
Italy (generics) ~37 € to 42 € ~40 € to 45 € ~480 € to 550 €
Branded Propecia (where still marketed) ~42 € to 57 € ~45 € to 61 € ~550 € to 740 €

In France, prices observed for different generic brands illustrate these differences (indicative prices, which vary between pharmacies):

Brand (France) Price (28 tablets) Price (84 tablets)
Finastéride Bailleul ~18 € ~32 €
Finastéride Biogaran ~27 € ~63 €
Finastéride EG ~22 € ~45 €
Finastéride Teva ~21 € ~44 €

Larger packs often lower the cost per tablet: with an 84-tablet pack at around 32 €, a year of treatment costs about 140 €.

Propecia, the original brand, is no longer marketed in France. In countries where it is still sold, it usually costs more than generics, but availability and the price difference vary by country and pharmacy.

Why do prices vary so much between brands?

Generic finasteride 1 mg medicines authorised in Europe contain the same active substance at the same strength as Propecia and must meet bioequivalence requirements, meaning they deliver the active substance to the body in a comparable way. Comparable efficacy and safety are therefore expected, although excipients and tablet appearance may differ. Price differences between brands mainly reflect commercial factors, such as manufacturer pricing, pack size and pharmacy margins, rather than a demonstrated difference in effectiveness.

Total Cost of Treatment: Beyond the Tablet Price

• Medication: roughly 140 € to 550 € per year for generics in the examples above, depending on the country, brand and pack size.

• Consultations: fees vary by country, provider and format (in person, by video or via an online questionnaire). Ask for the total price before booking.

• Follow-up: the frequency depends on local requirements and your situation. In France, official guidance recommends a follow-up consultation at least every 3 to 6 months, or earlier if side effects occur.

• Pharmacy and delivery fees: depending on the country and the provider, dispensing or delivery charges may apply. Ask whether they are included in the quoted price.

Long-term costs depend on medication prices, the follow-up required in your country and any additional treatment. Rather than comparing tablet prices alone, compare the total cost of a personalised treatment plan. Medical treatment and hair transplant surgery do not have the same objectives and can be complementary.

The 2025 EMA Safety Review: What You Need to Know

On 8 May 2025, the EMA's Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), which monitors the safety of medicines in the EU, concluded its review of finasteride and dutasteride medicines. The CMDh endorsed its recommendations on 19 June 2025, and the European Commission made them legally binding through Decision C(2025) 5896 final on 22 August 2025. The key points:

• Suicidal ideation (suicidal thoughts) is a recognised side effect of oral finasteride 1 mg and 5 mg. Its frequency cannot be estimated from the available data.

• The review assessed clinical studies, published literature and pharmacovigilance data, meaning reports of suspected side effects submitted by patients and healthcare professionals.

• The PRAC concluded that the benefit-risk balance remains favourable for the authorised uses. The product information was updated, and a patient card is now included in packs of finasteride 1 mg tablets.

• If you notice mood changes (low mood, depression, anxiety), stop finasteride 1 mg and seek medical advice promptly. If you have suicidal thoughts, seek help urgently, and call your local emergency number if you are in immediate danger.

• Tell your prescriber promptly if sexual problems occur (reduced libido, erection or ejaculation problems): they will assess whether treatment should be stopped. Sexual symptoms have been reported to persist after stopping treatment.

• Also tell your doctor about any breast changes (lump, pain, nipple discharge), mention that you take finasteride before any PSA blood test, and seek urgent help if you develop signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat.

In France, an annual shared information form (attestation d'information partagée), signed by the patient and the prescriber, must be presented to the pharmacist together with the prescription: since 16 April 2026 for treatment initiation, and since 16 June 2026 for ongoing treatment. Requirements in other countries may differ, so check your national rules.

Buying Finasteride 1 mg Online Safely: The EU Common Logo

Unregistered online sellers may supply falsified or substandard medicines, so use an appropriately registered healthcare provider and pharmacy. The rules for supplying prescription medicines online also differ between countries: in France, for example, prescription-only medicines cannot be sold online, while other countries allow registered pharmacies to dispense prescriptions remotely.

The EU Common Logo: an essential check, but not the only one

• Look for the EU common logo, which must show the flag of the country where the pharmacy is registered. A logo showing the EU flag instead of the national flag is not a valid common logo: do not rely on it.

• Click on the logo. It must take you to the official national register of authorised online pharmacies (in France, the register of the Conseil national de l'Ordre des pharmaciens), and the website address must match the register entry exactly.

• Check the prescription rules. Finasteride is a prescription-only medicine. Do not use a seller that supplies it without a valid prescription issued after an appropriate medical assessment.

Falsified medicines are a well-documented public health risk: they may contain the wrong dose, no active substance at all, or harmful impurities. Saving a few euros is not worth that risk.

Should You Split Finasteride 5 mg Tablets to Save Money?

Some people consider splitting 5 mg tablets to lower the cost. Do not change the strength of your medicine or split tablets to alter your dose without discussing it with your prescriber and pharmacist, for several reasons:

• Dose accuracy: 5 mg tablets are not designed to be cut into quarters, and a quarter of 5 mg is 1.25 mg, not 1 mg. Hand-split fragments can vary considerably.

• Authorised use: finasteride 5 mg medicines are authorised for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Using them for hair loss is outside their authorised indication and requires an individual prescribing decision under local rules.

• Exposure risk: women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must not handle broken or crushed finasteride tablets, because the active substance can be absorbed through the skin. The coating only protects against contact when the tablet is intact.

• Reimbursement: any reimbursement claim must accurately reflect the actual indication and comply with local eligibility rules.

If cost is a concern, ask your prescriber or pharmacist about authorised, affordable options, such as generics or larger packs.

Combining Finasteride With Other Treatments

A 2020 meta-analysis of five trials found that combining oral finasteride with topical minoxidil improved some hair-growth outcomes compared with either treatment alone, particularly on global photographic assessment, although not all outcomes differed significantly. Suitability and tolerability should be assessed individually. Topical minoxidil also adds to the monthly budget, with prices that vary by product and country.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision

Finasteride 1 mg is one of the most studied treatments for male androgenetic alopecia. It can be considered after a confirmed diagnosis and a discussion of its benefits, risks and alternatives with a doctor. In the examples above, a generic costs roughly 140 € to 550 € per year, depending on the country, brand and pack size, plus follow-up consultations. Three rules apply: obtain a valid prescription after a proper medical assessment, use a lawful prescribing and dispensing pathway in your country, and discuss the 2025 safety information with your doctor.

At Hairdex, we help patients in the countries we serve arrange a consultation with a qualified doctor, who assesses their hair loss and discusses suitable treatment options, including their benefits, risks and costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does finasteride 1 mg cost per month in Europe?

For generics, expect roughly 11 € to 45 € per month in the examples in this article, depending on the country, brand and pack size. The original brand, Propecia, usually costs more where it is still marketed.

Is finasteride 1 mg reimbursed by national health insurance?

Not in the countries we have checked. In France, finasteride 1 mg for hair loss is not reimbursed by the Assurance Maladie, and in the UK it is not available on the NHS for hair loss. Coverage elsewhere should be checked with your national health insurer.

Is generic finasteride as effective as Propecia?

Authorised generics contain the same active substance at the same strength and meet bioequivalence requirements, so comparable efficacy and safety are expected. Excipients and tablet appearance may differ.

Can I buy finasteride 1 mg online safely?

It depends on where you live. A valid prescription and a registered pharmacy are essential. The EU common logo helps you check a pharmacy's registration, but it does not override national restrictions on online sales or cross-border supply.

What is the annual cost of finasteride 1 mg treatment?

Roughly 140 € to 550 € per year for the medication in the examples in this article, plus follow-up consultations, whose cost depends on the country and the provider. Ask for an itemised estimate covering medication, consultations, dispensing and delivery.

Are there serious side effects I should know about?

Yes. Since the 2025 European review, suicidal ideation is a recognised side effect of oral finasteride, and its frequency cannot be estimated. Sexual side effects (reduced libido, erection or ejaculation problems) are also possible and have been reported to persist after stopping treatment. If your mood changes, stop finasteride 1 mg and seek medical advice promptly, and tell your prescriber promptly about any sexual problems.

Can I split finasteride 5 mg tablets to save money?

This is not recommended. A quarter of a 5 mg tablet does not give an accurate 1 mg dose, 5 mg medicines are not authorised for hair loss, and broken tablets must not be handled by women who are or may become pregnant. Ask your prescriber about authorised, affordable options.
